CYØX - Sable Island

Dick, Pete & Chris, K5AND, VE3IKV & W3CMP, are currently active as CYØX from Sable Island. This is mainly a 6mtr & 2mtr dxpedition, but they have also been working on at least 20mtr CW. Indeed, they obviously have at least one very good CW operator in the team. They will be here until July 7th

It looks like they are real keen on 2mtrs EME, using a KW to a long yagi. Their schedule is HERE.

My computer shows the beam heading as 58° / 238° from Dallas.

QSLs are requested via VE3IKV, direct with 2 green stamps.

QSL of WeekSable Island has been reasonably well activated before. CYØMM was active back in November 2002 did a great job of filling many band slots. Prior to that CYØSAB was back in November 1885. Both of those DXpeditions sent out beautiful color QSL cards. CYØAA also appears in my log.

Sable Island (French: île de Sable) is a small Canadian Island situated 180 km southeast of mainland Novas Scotia in the Atlantic Ocean. As of 2001, the island is home to around 15 people. The island is also home to over 300 free-roaming Horses, which are protected from human interference by law.

Sable Island  emerges from shallows on the continental shelf, which, with the area's frequent fog and sudden strong storms including Hurricanes and Northeasters have caused over 350 recorded shipwrecks. It is often referred to as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

5X1NH - Uganda

Nick, G3RWF is headed back to Uganda. This time he will be operating from Fort Portal in Western Uganda. He will be there from 15th June to 25th August. Nick is a good CW operator and reliable QSL'er. He also has a very attractive color QSL card.

My computer shows the beam heading as 65° / 245° from Dallas.

QSLs will be via G3RWF (He does not use eqsl)..

QSL of WeekUganda has been reasonably well activated before. Nick was operating from Fort Portal in February & March this year. Last November he was active from Kampala.
Previous operations have been 5X1P by G3MRC, and 5X1Z by SM6CAS, both in 2000.

Fort Portal is a town in western Uganda and the seat of both the Kabarole district and the Toro Kingdom. It is named for Sir Gerald Portal, a British Special Commissioner for Uganda, whose Statue graces the main road of the town. The town is close to the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Uganda has substantial natural resources, including fertile soils, regular rainfall, and sizable mineral deposits of copper and cobalt. The country has largely untapped reserves of both oil and natural gas. Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy, employing over 80% of the work force, with coffee accounting for the bulk of export revenues. Since 1986, the government (with the support of foreign countries and international agencies) has acted to rehabilitate an economy decimated during the regime of Idi Amin (Dictator & President 1971-1979) and subsequent civil war..

Swahili, a widely used language throughout eastern and central Africa, was approved as the country's second official national language in 2005. The country is 84% Christian and 12% Muslim. Uganda has a very young population, with a median age of 15 years.

Glorioso DXpedition delayed

From F5OGL, Didier the team leader Glorious 2008....

The operation for Glorioso 2008 must be delayed for some weeks. The HQ of the south zone of the Indian ocean announced us due to the fact that important works of facilities will take place on the island. During two and a half months, at the beginning of June, shelters anti cyclonic will be build to protect the military personnel and some equipment for the weather station.

Due to the number of persons who will be on the island during the same period, we decided with the HQ of force of the south zone of the Indian ocean to do this DXpédition when these works will be ended.

The exact dates will be define according to the operational occupation of the military transport in this region but we hope to accomplish this operation to the end of September or the beginning of October.

This leaves us the time to improve our preparations and, we thank you all those who contribute to the realization of this plan and firstly the military authorities of the Reunion island and our financial and equipment sponsors..

VU4 / VU7 - Another Chance...

The National Institute of Amateur Radio (NIAR) will be celebrating its "Silver Jubilee" in Hyderabad, India, between October 18-20th 2008. To help celebrate this event, look for some special amateur radio activities to take place between October 24th and November 3rd from many Indian locations which will include operations from the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (VU4) and Lakshadweep Islands (VU7). NIAR will be assisting foreign amateurs in regard to reciprocal licenses or operation permits for the VU4 and VU7 activations.

To receive details about license requirements, fill out the registration form at: http://www.niar.org/sj/form.html

More information is available at: http://www.niar.org/sj/index.htm

ZS8T is on Marion Island

Petrus will be on Marion Island for a year. Although he got there in April, he has been too busy for amateur radio operations yet.  The great news is he will have an Icom IC-7000, an Ameritron AL80B Amp, a Spiderbeam, A Steppir vertical and a Bencher paddle. Maybe my dreams of a CW contact with ZS8 will be fulfilled.

Excel Spreadsheet by Jari, OH2BU - The "Mega DX Peditions Honor Roll".

MEGA DX PEDITIONS HONOR ROLL. Jari, OH2BU, has put together and maintained an interesting Excel spreadsheet over the last 12 years called - The "Mega DX Peditions Honor Roll". This Honor Roll listing currently includes data of 114 DXpeditions that have worked 30,000 or more QSOs since 1979. This unique listing includes data on:

  • A summary on the DXpedition (dates, length, QSOs, stations..etc.)

  • Information on Logs, Web site, QSL routes and if it is in LoTW

  • List of operators of the DXpedition

  • QSO statistics per continents, modes and bands

  • Also continental, band and mode records

The whole purpose of this listing is to help future DXpeditions in planning their next operation, and to understand the possibilities in making QSOs to different continents and to optimize their efforts.

The LSDXA would like to thank Jari for permission to reproduce his amazing spreadsheet on this site. Please Click on the "Files" link in our menu to access it.

YV0, Aves Island

I was amazed to read about the damage hurricane Dean did to Aves Island in August 2007. Indeed, it washed 90% of the island away......  No, it's not an April the First joke, read about it, and see the photos on the YXØA website HERE.

Possible DXCC changes

The Netherlands Antilles was to be disbanded on December 15, 2008. This dissolution is still planned, but has been postponed to an indefinite future date However, they still hope to have this completed by 1/1/2010. The idea of the Netherlands Antilles as a state never enjoyed full support of all islands. Political relations between islands were often strained. After a long struggle, Aruba seceded from the Netherlands Antilles in 1986, to form its own state within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The desire for secession has also been strong in Sint Maarten.

I'm sure these will never count for DXCC, but it's interesting to see who can declare independence....
